Where Charity Meets Philanthropy in a Fresh, New Way

Baton Rouge Area Foundation: The Center for Nonprofit Excellence provides strategic and technical support to nonprofit organizations.

The distinction between “charity” and “philanthropy” is expressed in the traditional observation that giving a starving man a fish (charity) feeds him for a day, while teaching him how to fish (philanthropy) feeds him permanently.[1]Philanthropic support is essential for nonprofits to continue their missions and services to communities in need. The North American nonprofit sector, or “third sector”[2], is filled with examples of charitable efforts and philanthropic name-sake edifices throughout history.  But present-day philanthropy has added an additional dimension to almsgiving through modernization.  Currently, approximately 8.5% of overall fundraising revenue, excluding grants, was raised online.[3] Prospective donors can find a way to be a part of philanthropy by giving to their favorite charities.  The Giving Store is BRAF’s proposal to support charities.

Network of Women NOW is honored to be a part of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation’s (BRAF) Center for Nonprofit Excellence.  On June 1, 2023, BRAF is launching its Giving Store.  The Giving Store is a platform that allows philanthropists to browse the different nonprofit organizations’ missions and make monetary contributions to causes they are passionate about.  NOW is one of the many organizations that will be featured on The Giving Store’s platform.  Nonprofit organizations rely on online platforms such as The Giving Store as a fundraising opportunity.

BRAF philanthropists will learn about Network of Women NOW’s 2nd Annual End Period Poverty Campaign for 2023. This Campaign includes supply drives, fundraisers, and our research development strategy forum that minimizes stigmatic barriers associated with menstruation.  Our goal for  this campaign is to raise public awareness about period poverty through targeted research efforts concerning the current Menstrual equity crisis in Louisiana. Funding will help provide 5,000 middle and high school students with an Ubibi Bag for the beginning of classes for Fall 2023.  Our Ubibi Bag is filled with disposable sanitary and feminine hygiene products.

Network of Women NOW is aspiring to reach new levels of programming for women and young girls to build brighter futures for themselves.  We are global citizens that advocate for a healthier planet and greater human wellness through the work of our nonprofit organizations.
